Flexibility and ability to respond quickly
The times of predictable economic cycles with stable economic growth followed by a predictable period of slowdown are over for now. The impact of the credit crisis has not nearly been absorbed. As a result there will only be room for very limited growth in the coming decades, meaning that the economy will remain unsettled for a long time with only short spells of upswing followed by a crisis, the depth and duration of which cannot be predicted. Flexibility and the ability to act swiftly is essential in such a situation and that means being able to manage costs down quickly while rapidly increasing production capacity. Structural shortage of qualified workers
Another important factor in the labor market in addition to the economic crisis is the ageing workforce. In a few decades European labor markets will face shortages of dozens of millions of workers.
